Rosh Hodesh Sivan Throngs in the NYT’s

Women of the Wall celebrated Rosh Hodesh this morning in the presence of thousands of ultra-Orthodox women and men who came to protest our prayers. I have never seen so many people in the Kotel plaza ever. The Israeli police fulfilled their task and protected us and the dignity of Israeli civil society. Some people cursed and threw stones  – thank heavens, no-one was hurt, and some offenders were detained. We applaud the authorities who uphold the Jerusalem DIstrict and HaShalom Court decisions.

There’s no turning back – many witnessed the subversive possibility of women’s full spiritual autonomy. Women, adorned with tallitot and tefillin rejoiced with a bat mitzva and a mother with her new baby girl.

May we open our hearts and receive the Torah together this week.
